Video captures sighting of rare giant squid in Japan

A YouTube video posted by ANN News in Japan shows an extremely rare giant squid captured on tape on Christmas Eve.

CNN reports that spectators on a pier in Toyama Bay in central Japan spotted the mysterious creature. It swam under fishing boats and went close to the surface for several hours.

The squid was captured on video by a submersible camera. A diver also swam near the red and white giant squid.

The curator of the Uozu Aquarium in Toyama told CNN there were 16 reports last season of Architeuthis squid being trapped by fishing nets. He said this is the first sighting of the season that runs from November to March, and he expects there to be more sightings.

This squid is said to be smaller than others of its kind and may be younger. Giant squid usually grow as large as 13 meters or 43 feet long and inhabit deep waters. As sightings of these creatures are extremely rare, they were considered a myth for hundreds of years.
