Brewer to request boost for technology, manufacturing

PHOENIX — In an effort to further boost the state’s economy, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer said Monday that she would ask lawmakers to approve a package that would benefit the technology and manufacturing fields.

As part of the package, Brewer wants to rescind a sales tax that is applied when businesses use power.

“That puts our current manufactures and the ones we hope to recruit at a disadvantage,” she said during Monday’s State of the State address.

Saying the action would help sustain Arizona in the long-term, Brewer said the move will make the state much more competitive.

While Brewer named several companies in her State of the State address, she said one in specific needs a guaranteed lone of funding.

“It is imperative to have a stable, dedicated funding source for TGen to continue its valuable role as a catalyst in developing Arizona’s bioscience industry,” she said.

Brewer also called for the legislature to ensure the long-term functioning of the infrastructure, which will be needed to attract and keep businesses.
