Officials: Arizona hikers should be prepared for cool weather this holiday season

Hikers may enjoy cooler temperatures during the holiday season, but officials warn that should not change what they bring along to tackle the great outdoors.
Captain Ardell Deliz with the Phoenix Fire Department said to bring water, a snack and wear a light jacket, because it can get windy.
“Make sure that you dress appropriately for what you’re used to and what your hike is going to be like,” Deliz said.
He said out-of-towners have an easier time adjusting to the cooler temperatures, but that does not always make them smarter.
“Sometimes we see people wearing flip-flops or sandals on the mountain,” Deliz said.
Deliz said if you are hiking, make sure you wear covered shoes and bring sunscreen as well, even if the temperature is only in the 50s. He said there has been a good bit of foot traffic on hiking trails during this holiday season, which means more eyes on the trail when someone needs help.
“The great thing about that is if somebody gets in trouble, don’t be afraid to ask them if they need help,” Deliz said.
