Accredited ASU engineering program now completely online

Engineering students at Arizona State University can now earn their diploma through a web-based program.

It’s the first accredited electrical engineering undergraduate program being offered entirely online. Students are able to perform labs and build circuits on the home computer. Video conferencing software is used and professors can hold office hours for students via Skype.

“The students can set appointments, for example, during the weekend,” said Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering professor Marco Saraniti, who teaches in the online program.

Saraniti delivers video lectures, which students can access on their own time.

“They watch [the clips] following a calendar, a schedule that we suggest, but they have a lot of flexibility,” Saraniti said.

About 800 ASU students are working toward an electrical engineering bachelor’s degree online. Saraniti thinks even more programs and degrees could become entirely web-based in the future.

“If you keep quality high, [online degrees] could be a viable alternative to the traditional campus experience,” Saraniti said.
