Main Street Minute: Valley youth, amateur programs awarded $1.5M sports grant

Several Valley youth programs have been awarded a $1.5 millions sports grant to make improvements.

• The Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority will award nearly $1.5 million to more than a dozen organizations that promote youth and amateur sports programs in Maricopa County. The grants will help fund an archery range at Glendale Heroes Regional Park, a new gym for the Boys and Girls Club of metro Phoenix and a renovated baseball-playing surface for special needs kids at Miracle League of Arizona’s ballpark in Scottsdale.

• Which Wich Superior Sandwich locations across the Valley are partnering with the Watkins Emergency Shelter for single women starting Saturday. The chain is donating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches so women have something to take with them while the shelter is closed because of city requirements.

• A local restaurant has been named one of the best in the country on Open Table’s top 100 list. Kai at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort and Spa near Chandler came in third. It was the only Arizona restaurant to crack the top 10. Scottsdale placed three eateries, Lobby Tea Court at the Phoenician, Cafe Monarch and Shinbay, on the list.
