PHOENIX — A major Phoenix area highway was reopened Thursday after police were able to talk down a man who made his way to the exterior ledge of an overpass.

The young man was on an overpass on Hardy Drive overlooking the U.S. 60 near Priest Drive. Authorities shut down westbound lanes at Mill Avenue and the eastbound ramp at Interstate 10 before closing the freeway entirely for a short time.

Traffic was backed up for miles along both US 60 and nearby Interstate 10.

The freeway was reopened about 9:40 a.m.

Traffic was also affected in a nearby neighborhood.

The Department of Public Safety assisted Tempe Police with traffic closures.
