Phoenix police searching for suspect in August murder of transgender woman

PHOENIX — Phoenix police are searching for a suspect who is accused of murdering a transgender woman back in August.

Kandis Capri, a 35-year-old transgender woman, was found shot dead in the parking lot of the La Reserve apartment complex on the night of Aug. 11. Capri, born as Dedrick Gaines, was pronounced dead at a local hospital after being found with multiple gunshot wounds.
The complex is located near 45th and West Virginia avenues in Phoenix.

Police said the motive of the shooting is unclear, but Capri’s death marked the 17th of a transgender or gender non-conforming person in the United States this year, according to the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs.
The suspect was described as a 25-year-old black male who weighted approximately 155 pounds and was clean-shaven. He was seen leaving the area on foot. Police described an investigative lead in connection with the incident as a black male in his early- to mid-20s with a thin- to medium-build.
