PHOENIX — There will be one less GOP challenger to John McCain’s U.S. Senate seat next year — Rep. Matt Salmon of Arizona said he wasn’t going to run.
The Hill reported Salmon and McCain met privately Tuesday and that Salmon told the five-term lawmaker, “I’m not going to run against you.”
Arizona Rep. Kelli Ward remained the only formal opponent to McCain in the Republican primary.
Salmon told the political website that, “I’ve done some polling and I think I could do very well, but it would be a bloody campaign…” that could eventually lead to victory for Democratic U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick. She announced her plans to run in April.
Kirkpatrick is in her third term in Congress.
