Beware of APS telephone scam swindling customers

If you have recently received an urgent call from someone at Arizona Public Service, be careful. It may be a scam.

A new highly sophisticated scheme is trying to prank businesses and callers. Phoenix Business Journal reports the FBI, APS security and local law enforcement are working to solve the problem, but in the meantime be on alert.

Victims are now receiving calls telling them to call a toll-free number to pay outstanding electric bills. If they do not comply, power will be cut off.

When the toll-free number is reached, it sounds exactly like the actual APS call center. Reportedly if you question the scammer, they get upset and offer a rude response before disconnecting.

APS said the only valid telephone numbers to call for APS are listed on your business utility bill. Never call other numbers.
