Tempe apartment complex officials say they will not rent to residents under age of 23

PHOENIX — A new apartment complex just minutes from Arizona State University’s main campus will only rent to people of a certain age.

Hanover on Mill Avenue, a brand-new luxury apartment complex located near 5th Street and Mill Avenue in Tempe, prides itself on being “a 23 (year-old) and older community,” according to its website.

KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Legal Analyst Monica Lindstrom said the exclusion of certain ages may break a city anti-discrimination law that was passed in 2014.

The law would bring fines up to $2,500 against any business that discriminated based on sexual orientation, race, religion and disability, among other factors.

“It appears based on what this company is advertising that they do not want anybody under the age of 23 in there and that can be a problem,” she said. “Right now, Tempe has an anti-discrimination law that prohibits discrimination based several classes, including age.”

KTAR called the company and officials confirmed they would not rent to someone under the age of 23.
