Phoenix teen killed trying to protect sister

PHOENIX — Phoenix Police said a murdered teenager was trying to stop an armed robber who attacked his younger sister Thursday night in West Phoenix.

An 18-year-old is accused of opening fire in Marivue Park and killing Murphy. The 16-year-old was shot once in the upper body and died at a local hospital. His 14-year-old sister was not harmed.

Phoenix Police Officer James Holmes said when the accused shooter fled, a witness followed.

“We had a lot of witnesses. A 28-year-old man gave chase to the suspect as he fled through the park,” Holmes said.

Holmes said the gunman shot at the witness as he ran. Police eventually caught up to him and said although they don’t condone citizens chasing down a criminal, it did help lead to the arrest.

“He gave us clear direction of travel on the suspect and a good description.”

Holmes said officers were able to locate and arrest the suspect but are withholding his name while they investigate.

He’s been booked into jail on a first-degree murder charge, two counts of armed robbery and an aggravated assault charge.
