Former Arizona judge responds to call for Isaac aid

PHOENIX — A former Maricopa County Superior Court judge who stepped up to help the Red Cross deal with Hurricane Katrina is on his way back to the Gulf Coast.

Tom Jacobs left Sky Harbor Monday morning for Montgomery, Ala., where the Red Cross is staging operations to assist with fallout from Tropical Storm Isaac.

Jacobs will be stationed in Alabama or Mississippi and could be there for up to three weeks.

“They expect it to develop into a Category 2, so you’re talking over 100 mph winds,” said Jacobs.

Meanwhile, Sky Harbor is tracking the storm and so far there have been no flight delays or cancellations to the Gulf region.

Airport spokeswoman Julie Rodriguez said New Orleans is not a major connecting city for Phoenix Travelers, but if Isaac forces cancellations it will have a ripple effect across the country.

“If your destination in New Orleans later this week it’s very important to check flight status,” said Rodriguez. “Whether it’s picking up someone at the airport or flying out, it’s very important to check flight status before you come to the airport.”

U.S. Airways and Southwest are offering flexible rebooking on some routes to the Gulf Coast region, including New Orleans.
