Last 9/11 rescue dog honored with special day in New York City

The last surviving rescue dog who worked at Ground Zero after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, was given a special day in New York City this week.

When the towers fell, Bretagne and her handler, Denise Corliss, were dispatched from Texas A&M’s Texas Task Force 1 to help with search-and-rescue and, later, recovery missions.

Bretagne (pronounced like Brittany) was 1 when she was sent to help in rescue efforts. When the people over at BarkBox learned of her service record and her upcoming 16th birthday, they decided to bring the golden retriever — with Corliss in tow — back to new York City for a special day of doggie fun.

The day started with a special limousine greeting at LaGuardia airport before a suite (see what we did there?) welcome at a Central Park hotel. Bretagne then was escorted around town in a vintage taxi, got some time in at the dog park and then went back to the hotel to receive a ton of gifts.

Bretagne also enjoyed some street celebrity, as many New Yorkers stopped to thank both her and Corliss for their work after the terrorist attacks.
