Glendale police ready for Cardinals-Raiders game

GLENDALE, Ariz. — University of Phoenix Stadium will be packed with almost 70,000 people for Friday’s Arizona Cardinals preseason home opener and not all of them will be pulling for the home team.

“When you get two teams with passionate fan bases there’s always the potential for problems,” said Glendale Police Officer Brent Coombs. “That’s why we have people in the interior of the stadium and people moving about in the tailgating.”

More than 100 officers will be carrying out security at the game. Coombs said it doesn’t matter if you’re a Cardinals or Raiders fan, the police have a zero tolerance on any abusive behavior.

“Anyone whose desire is to ruin that experience, we’re going to take them out of the equation by removing them from the game,” he said.

Despite Raiders fans having a tough reputation, Coombs said that most of the time incidents at games occur because a fan has had a bit too much to drink.
