PHOENIX — Law enforcement leaders from around the country are gathering in Phoenix on Thursday to address the national state of police and community relations.
The name of the event, Bridge Summit, symbolizes law enforcement’s efforts to bridge the gap between police and the public.
Kerwin Brown, president and CEO at The Black Chamber of Arizona, said growing tensions between the police and the communities they serve brought the need for this type of event.
“There have been a lot of police shootings of unarmed people and lately there has been police being shot so obviously there’s a huge divide,” he said.
Brown said tensions between the black community and police continue to rise nationwide and he hopes the summit will help solve some of those issues.
“It only made sense for us to be involved with creating a dialogue, if you will, to try and create best practices,” he said.
The summit will run from 7:30 am to 4 pm at the Hotel Palomar in Downtown Phoenix.
