PHOENIX — Modern technology is causing some hotels to drop a “special” hotel amenity.

Ritz Carlton and other Marriott operations in the Valley pulled the plug on offering adult-only movies, but not because they’re becoming the morality police.

“Basically, people travel with their own emerging technology — cellphones, iPads, DVD systems on their computers, that kind of thing,” said Kristin Jarnagin with the Arizona Hotel and Lodging Association.

Jarnagin said hotels have to pay for services that make adult-only movies available to customers and the new personal technology is cutting into their bottom line.

In-room use of video games and adult movies has been dropping since the recession, said Jarnagin.

“Each hotel has to weigh that themselves,” she said. “What they’re making from it, what they’re providing to the guests and what their guests demands are.

“It does cost them money to provide in room movies, games. All of that entertainment is pretty expensive.”
