More legal action coming for SB 1070

PHOENIX — The same judge who put the so-called “show me your papers” provision of Senate Bill 1070 on hold two years ago is being asked to do it again.

The Supreme Court recently upheld the provision that requires Arizona police officers to check the immigration status of people they stop for other reasons starting this week. Opponents argue that Latinos in Arizona would face systematic racial profiling.

SB 1070 opponents want U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton to stop the provision from taking effect or, in the short term, a temporary restraining order to give them time to permanently block the provision.

Jimmy Chavez, president of the Arizona Police Association, said race has nothing to do with it.

“We’re not only trained, but the whole thought that it’s going to cause police in general to start racially profiling, is ridiculous,” he said.

“We are only going to contact somebody we witness a crime or a crime has been committed and we need to take action.”
