Mitt Romney to choose Sen. Marco Rubio as running mate?

Mitt Romney will choose Florida Sen. Marco Rubio as his running mate soon, said a Valley political strategist.

Stan Barnes, a conservative Valley political pundit with Copperstate Consulting, said he expects a decision soon from Mitt Romney in an effort to shift attention away from the controversy surrounding Bain Capital, his finances and unreleased tax returns. Barnes believes the choice will be Marco Rubio of Florida.

“Rubio equals Florida and Florida is in the balance,” he said. “Rubio breaks another color barrier in the United States. All of that means that Rubio has to be in the top tier. We’re talking about who’s gonna be the vice president of the United States and that’s not a bad conversation, from Romney’s point of view.”

Barnes said there are some very qualified women to be on the Republican presidential ticket with Mitt Romney and pointed to New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, but Barnes said John McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin four years ago probably ended any chance of that happening.

“The McCain – Palin thing for a moment looked brilliant and, in retrospect, did not look so brilliant,” he said. “It hurt the chances for a female vice presidential nominee in the Republican party for at least a couple of election cycles.”
