One man is dead and another is behind bars after a road rage incident led to a shooting in Scottsdale on Tuesday, authorities said.
William E. McGinty, 43, called 911 after the shooting and told police he had to “defend myself” against a person who was “road raging” at him, according to the arrest report.
McGinty waited in his car at the shooting scene near 87th Street and Cactus Road after making the call, and he complied with the Scottsdale Police Department officers who took him into custody. He was booked into jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, with bond set at $1 million.
Officers found the victim, whose name was not released, lying face down on the roadway with at least one gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital but did not survive his injuries.
Traffic camera footage of McGinty’s and the victim’s vehicles did not show any aggressive driving behavior by either motorist, according to the arrest report.
The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office will make the final charging decision after reviewing the case.
