The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office said Wednesday that a federal monitor deployed to the Valley for the 2026 primary election had previously committed an election offense.

Officials discovered monitor David Levin pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in connection with a election-related criminal offense in 2016, according to a letter the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office sent to the Justice Department.

The letter was written by Deputy County Attorney Joseph E. La Rue on behalf of County Attorney Rachel Mitchell, the Maricopa County Attorney Board of Supervisors and the Maricopa County Elections Department.

The prosecutor’s office declined a request for additional information about the letter, which did not specify the charge against Levin.

“We trust that the DOJ was not aware of this guilty plea prior to sending him as a monitor,” La Rue wrote. “I am writing, however, to alert you that the Department will not credential Mr. Levin to be an election monitor for any future elections in Maricopa County, including the 2026 general election.”

The DOJ will be deploying 1,000 monitors to polling sites across the U.S. on Election Day, including in Arizona.

In the letter, La Rue asked that the DOJ confirm in writing it will not send any election monitors to Maricopa County that it knows have been convicted of a felony or election-related criminal offenses.

“Because of the necessity of election integrity, as well as the Department’s desire to foster trust in elections, this a condition that the Department requires,” La Rue emphasized.

Makes you wonder how many more of the 1,000 "monitors" have a similarly sketchy background?

Is the administration corrupt? Or incompetent. Neither scenario is optimal if you seek to convince people “the cheaters are on the other side.”
