Cyclists and pedestrians have more room to get around north Tempe following the completion of improvements along Scottsdale Road.

The project added bike lanes and pedestrian upgrades to a 1.2-mile stretch between Continental Drive and Curry Road.

Work began in August 2025 and wrapped up this September.

What did the bike lane project change along Scottsdale Road?

The improvements include:

  • Buffered bike lanes with vertical posts separating them from traffic.
  • Pedestrian curb ramps.
  • New and improved medians with landscaping and trees.
  • Pedestrian crossing push buttons, including accessible buttons for people with disabilities.

Improvements like these support the city’s goal of making it safer and easier to reach transit routes, parks, schools, businesses and other destinations.

Now that the project is done, Scottsdale Road is officially one of Tempe’s multimodal corridors. That term refers to routes designed to accommodate people walking, biking, driving or using public transit.

A $5.9 million grant from the Maricopa Association of Governments’ Transportation Alternatives/Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Program helped fund the project, along with local Tempe Transit Tax revenue.
