Former Arizona State hockey coach Greg Powers is receiving more than $1.3 million as part of his separation agreement with the school amid a controversy over a player’s collapse during a workout in August.
Matthew Mayich, a 21-year-old transfer player, remains hospitalized on life support after collapsing from heat illness during an outdoor ASU hockey workout led by a former Green Beret on Aug. 20.
Attorneys for the Mayich family have said his condition is irreversible.
ASU has been criticized for its response to the incident and for the possibility that the hockey team failed to follow the athletic program’s heat safety protocols related to the workout.
Powers was placed on paid leave Sept. 30, two days after seven of Mayich’s teammates anonymously demanded an independent investigation into the incident after the school conducted an internal review.
On Oct. 2, ASU hired former Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Scott Bales to conduct an independent review.
Power’s final day of employment was Oct. 16, nearly two months after Mayich collapsed.
Why is former ASU hockey coach Greg Powers getting $1.3 million?
Powers will receive 75% of his remaining contract in three payments, the university said in an Oct. 14 departure letter.
ASU and Powers separated by mutual agreement, according to the letter, which Powers signed. He would have received a smaller percentage of the money left on his contract if he had been fired.
An ASU spokesperson said Powers had more than $1.773 million left on his deal, which was extended last year through 2030. At 75%, his total separation payout is just under $1.33 million.
The payment schedule is $531,923.08 now, $398,942.31 in August 2027 and $398,942.31 in August 2028.
The day after the separation agreement was reached, former NHL head coach Dave Hakstol was hired to be the new ASU hockey coach.
The team won both of its games over the weekend with Hakstol behind the bench.

He should probably keep that check in escrow
And I am guessing the Mayich family will go after (and likely get) a big chunk of those separation dollars.
It was a "mutual agreement" as opposed to a involuntary separation because Powers was a good soldier who said nothing for 40 days and did everything possible to sweep it under the rug, saving the administration from further embarrassment and guilt. It was a reward, not a punishment. I suspect his agents/lawyers will get their cut of the bonus also. Everybody is going to make a boatload of money except the kid who spends the rest of his life in a coma.
