Democratic incumbent Kris Mayes secured victory over Republican Warren Petersen in Arizona’s attorney race, The Associated Press has projected.

The race was called just after 2 a.m. Wednesday. Fontes was leading 55.4% to 44.6% as of 5 a.m.

Democrats retained the state’s three top elected positions, with Mayes joining Gov. Katie Hobbs and Secretary of State Adrian Fontes in the win column.

Mayes, Petersen clashed over police, water and Trump lawsuits

Arizona voters chose between Democratic Attorney General Kris Mayes and Republican state Senate President Warren Petersen in a race that centered on law enforcement, water and how the office should handle the federal government.

Mayes, a former Republican, ran on her consumer protection record, including lawsuits against corporate landlords and a Saudi-owned farm accused of over-pumping groundwater.

Her office also sued the Trump administration dozens of times. Mayes said that litigation protected $2.3 billion in federal funds for the state.

Petersen has served in the state Legislature since 2013 and won the GOP nomination in July over Rodney Glassman. As Senate president, he intervened to defend state laws Mayes declined to defend, including Arizona’s ban on transgender girls in girls’ sports.

Petersen was backed by the state’s major police unions and accused Mayes of politicizing the office.

Mayes questioned Petersen’s legal experience, noting he passed the bar in 2020. She also criticized the more than $600,000 that a mobile home park company her office sued gave to an outside group supporting him. Petersen said he did not accept that money.

AZ decided to follow the law instead of the senile POTUS. Now let's get to work on getting some more justice done.

Now that the election is over and the adults prevailed, hopefully Mayes re-opens the fake electors prosecutions. Those people still deserve justice for attempting to steal my vote.
