Boy injured in shooting involving off-duty Mesa officer, security guard outside venue

Two people were hospitalized early Saturday morning after a shooting involving an off-duty police officer and a security guard outside a venue in Mesa, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 1:05 a.m. outside Versalles Reception Hall near Main Street and Stapley Drive, according to the Mesa Police Department.

A boy attempted to enter a private event at the venue but was turned away. The boy then pulled out a handgun and fired at a security guard, police said.

After firing the shot, the boy ran toward a vehicle. Both the security guard and an off-duty Mesa police officer followed the boy before shooting at him.

The boy fled south across Main Street, where he encountered an on-duty Mesa police patrol officer. Police said the boy took out a handgun and threw it to the ground before officers took him into custody without further incident.

The boy suffered apparent gunshot wounds and was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A man who was inside a car associated with the boy was also struck by gunfire, according to authorities. He was also taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Neither the off-duty officer nor the security guard was injured, and no bystander injuries were reported.

The Scottsdale Police Department will lead the shooting investigation as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team, a multi-agency partnership that handles critical incidents involving law enforcement officers.

The Mesa Police Department is leading the investigation into the aggravated assault case that preceded the shooting.
