Residents in the city of Maricopa are being urged to boil tap water before using it after testing indicated it could be contaminated with E. coli.
Global Water – Santa Cruz Water Company, the water provider for the Pinal County city, issued a precautionary boil water advisory Wednesday.
The advisory was issued after two preliminary tests indicated the presence of E. coli, a bacterium that can cause intestinal illness in humans and is especially concerning for people with weakened immune systems.
Until the tap water is confirmed to be free of E. coli, Maricopa residents should boil the water for at least one minute and then cool it before using it for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth or washing dishes.
Bottled water is a safe alternative, but filtration systems, including pitchers with filters, do not provide protection against E. coli.
The water utility said Maricopa residents can expect additional information Thursday.
The city said questions should be directed to Global Water Resources at 866-940-1102.
