A pedestrian was killed Sunday in Phoenix after being struck by a car whose driver apparently experienced a medical emergency, authorities said.
Officers received reports of a serious collision around 6:15 p.m. near 23rd Avenue and Williams Drive, according to the Phoenix Police Department.
Based on preliminary information, police believe a vehicle was going northbound and left its designated lane after the driver experienced a medical emergency.
The vehicle made its way through the southbound lanes, onto the sidewalk and struck a pedestrian, police said.
The vehicle dragged the 47-year-old man a short distance before it struck the side of a nearby building and stopped in the landscape next to the building.
The pedestrian was taken to a nearby hospital and later died from his injuries. The driver was also taken to a hospital for treatment related to the medical event.
Police do not believe impairment was a factor in the collision.
Vehicular Crimes Unit detectives assumed the investigation, which remains ongoing.
