Three puppies were found dead and more than a dozen dogs were rescued after being left by their owner at a VRBO rental property earlier this month.
The Arizona Humane Society received a report on Sept. 5 about multiple dogs being abandoned at the rented home. When cruelty investigators arrived, they found three dead puppies in a freezer and 14 dogs who were sick, matted and living “horrific conditions.”
The dogs were taken to AHS’ Lazin Animal Foundation Trauma Hospital and found to be malnourished, covered in urine and feces and in need of immediate medical attention. Two of them were in irreversible organ failure and had to be humanely euthanized.
The surviving dogs range in age from 3 months to five years and six are still looking for foster homes after being medically cleared.
In recent weeks, more than 300 pets have been rescued from similar conditions, according to AHS. It added that its team is called to an average of 20 hoarding cases a month.
