Thunderstorms cause ground delay for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport

Widespread thunderstorms caused a ground delay for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Tuesday morning.

Departures to Phoenix from airports within 1,200 nautical miles were delayed by an average of 37 minutes, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The delay time was expected to increase through the 9 a.m. hour, peaking at more than 50 minutes, before easing.

Flights from across the western United States and as far east as Texas were affected.

As of 6:30 a.m., the Sky Harbor website showed 126 delays, and flight-tracking website FlightAware listed delays for 109 flights into or out of Phoenix.

A 6 a.m. American Airlines flight from Tucson to Phoenix was canceled.
