US restricts travel, activities in Nogales citing threat information

The United States restricted activities in and travel to Nogales on Friday due to new threat information.

The U.S. Consulate General said that, due to the change, essential movement is occurring during daylight hours only.

It noted that Sonora is labeled as a level three travel area, which means that citizens should reconsider traveling there, due to terrorism and crime.

The consulate general advised U.S. citizens who travel to Nogales to be aware of their surroundings and exercise increased caution.

In the event of an incident, it said to follow instruction from Mexican law enforcement, seek shelter and notify friends and family of your safety.

It was also recommended that travelers keep an eye on local media coverage for the area.

It not known how long the restriction will be in place.
