No freeway closures scheduled, but heavy traffic expected this Labor Day weekend

No construction closures are scheduled on state highways over the Labor Day weekend, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.

ADOT and its contractors will take the long holiday weekend and give commuters a break from closures along state highways, including Phoenix-area freeways. Most weekends, the Valley map is pockmarked with freeway closures or lane restrictions.

Don’t expect clear roads this Labor Day weekend

Just because construction crews won’t be out on roads this weekend, don’t expect to be alone on the roads. In fact, drivers should expect heavier traffic during peak periods, particularly Friday afternoon and Monday afternoon and evening, the agency said.

The heaviest traffic is expected on Interstate 10 and Interstate 17 north of Phoenix.

Other busy routes include State Route 87 between Fountain Hills and Payson, US 93 between Wickenburg and the Hoover Dam, and I-8 and I-10 between the Phoenix area and the California state line.

The I-17 flex lanes between Black Canyon City and Sunset Point will be open for northbound traffic through late Saturday, then shift to southbound travel Sunday and Monday.

ADOT tells holiday commuters to keep an emergency kit with extra drinking water, a first-aid kit, flashlight, charged cellphone and prescription medications.

The ADOT Incident Response Unit will patrol Phoenix-area freeways in Maricopa County from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday through Monday.
