Arizona man sentenced to federal prison for assault with zip tie strangulation

An Arizona man was sentenced Tuesday to 57 months in prison after pleading guilty to assault by strangulation, officials said.

Jarret Haines’ time in prison will be followed by three years of supervised release, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office (USAO) for the District of Arizona.

On Jan. 24, 2025, the 37-year-old — who was enrolled as a member of the Tohono O’odham Nation — punched a woman multiple times in the face before putting a large zip tie around her neck until she lost consciousness, prosecutors said.

The woman’s son called 911 and the Tohono O’odham Police Department intervened.

“On the heels of the annual Four Corners Conference taking place this week in Glendale, Arizona, prosecutions such as this underscore the USAO’s dedication to working with our partners to protect indigenous victims of intimate partner violence within our native communities,” United States Attorney Timothy Courchaine said in a news release.
