A 23-year-old Tucson Police Department recruit was fatally shot and his fiancée was wounded early Wednesday at their Tucson home, authorities said.

Carlos Ramirez was found dead inside the residence on South Enchanted Spring Drive shortly before 6 a.m., the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said. His fiancée, also 23, was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound and was in stable condition.

The couple has a young child.

Ramirez was a former Pima County corrections officer. His fiancée is a current corrections officer with the department.

“This is a tragic event and a tremendous loss for our community,” Tucson Police Chief Monica Prieto said at a news conference alongside Sheriff Chris Nanos.

Detectives are searching for two suspects described as Hispanic men wearing black clothing and ski masks.

They are also seeking a gray SUV, believed to be a 2007 to 2013 Acura MDX possibly with a missing fuel door, in connection with the shooting.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is also assisting with the investigation. Nanos said family members of the couple are DPS employees.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911.
