Waymo expanded its autonomous ride-hailing service in the Phoenix area by 55 square miles Thursday, pushing into Gilbert, additional parts of Chandler and the San Tan Ranch area.
The expansion brings Waymo’s total service area in the Valley to more than 350 square miles. The company said its expansion will continue east, offering pickup and drop-off at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. In a statement, the company said that the expansion would happen “in the near future.”
Waymo currently offers rides to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Scottsdale Airpark.
The growth into the East Valley also moves Waymo’s service area closer to the company’s own Mesa facility, allowing vehicles to enter service directly after leaving the site.
Waymo began offering rides in the East Valley in 2020. The Alphabet-owned company now provides thousands of weekly trips across Phoenix, Tempe, Scottsdale and the surrounding area.
