The Arizona Department of Health Services is urging parents, teachers and coaches to take extra precautions as students return to school during extreme heat.

The department says children and teenagers are especially vulnerable to heat-related illness during outdoor activities, including recess, sports and practices.

AZDHS stressed that children and teenagers are at a higher risk of heat-related illness, highlighting some warning signs to look out for:

  • Muscle spasms or pain
  • Heavy sweating
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

If a student is experiencing any of those symptoms, the teacher should bring them to a shaded, cool spot and give them water. Call 911 if they do not improve.

AZDHS also reminded parents and teachers that if a child is thirsty, that means they’re already dehydrated. Reusable water bottles are encouraged, and children should drink water before leaving for school each day.

For physical activities outdoors, the department recommends scheduling sports or recess in the early morning before peak heat hours. If that’s not possible, students should take breaks in shaded, air-conditioned spaces.

AZDHS also suggests allowing athletes to acclimate to the heat by giving them a few days to get used to the heat before conducting full-intensity exercises.
