Man faces robbery, kidnapping and sexual assault charges after Phoenix bus stop attack

A Phoenix man was arrested Saturday on charges stemming from an armed robbery and sexual assault, according to court documents.

Kenneth Calvin Smith, 30, allegedly approached a couple at a bus stop near McDowell Road and 24th Street around 4:30 a.m. on Aug. 1, pointing a gun at the girlfriend while her boyfriend slept.

The woman gave Smith the only dollar she had and told him she did not have any other money, the probable cause statement said.

The conversation woke her boyfriend, who pulled out his empty wallet when Smith pointed the gun at him and tried to hand over a card listing resources for homeless people, according to court documents.

Smith allegedly forced the woman to a nearby parking lot, where he sexually assaulted her. According to court documents, Smith penetrated the woman with a handgun during the assault, telling her, “I hope it doesn’t go off.”

After several minutes, the boyfriend ran to the parking lot and told Smith he had called police. Smith allegedly pointed the handgun at him and demanded the phone, but the boyfriend threw it into nearby bushes rather than hand it over.

Court documents said Smith then fled westbound on McDowell Road from the scene.

The woman later underwent a forensic exam that revealed multiple injuries.

Smith was arrested Saturday, a week after the robbery and sexual assault. His bond was set at $500,000.

According to court documents, Smith has a criminal history that includes arrests for three DUI offenses as well as threats and intimidation, domestic violence-related criminal damage and assault.

Records show he was previously convicted of DUI, threats and intimidation, and two criminal damage offenses.

Smith was booked on two counts of armed robbery, one count of kidnapping, two counts of sexual assault and two counts of aggravated assault. He was also booked on a misdemeanor warrant related to a previous domestic violence-related criminal damage charge.
