Arizona Humane Society sends out urgent plea ahead of free adoption event

The Arizona Humane Society (AHS) is urgently asking for community members to come to its free adoption event for all pets on Saturday as its full shelters are being pushed to the limit.

The animal welfare organization explained the situation became more dire after it took in more than 10 pets from a single home on Thursday, adding it was the 120th large-scale intake case of this year.

On Saturday, all pets — including puppies and kittens — will have $0 adoptions fees at all three of AHS’ adoption locations.

The adoption special occurs when AHS needs to immediately clear kennel space as it has more than 900 pets in its shelters and another 600 in foster homes. Additionally, the shelter system sees an average of 80 new intakes daily.

AHS emphasized the adoption event gives pets like Gigi, who has been under the organization’s care for more than 90 days, another chance at finding a home.

Gigi was rescued by AHS’ Animal Rescue and Cruelty Team in May with five other pups after they were found living outdoors in deadly heat with no access to food, water or shelter.

She was treated for heat exposure and is now up for adoption.
