Rain, storms roll into Phoenix area, leaving scattered power outages across Valley

Rain and severe storms rolled across parts of the Phoenix metropolitan area Saturday afternoon, bringing brief relief from the summer heat along with gusty winds and scattered power outages across the Valley.

Dark clouds built up over the East Valley before spreading west, prompting the National Weather Service in Phoenix to monitor incoming activity for gusty winds.

As the storms swept through, utility crews worked to restore electricity to affected neighborhoods. Both Arizona Public Service and Salt River Project reported thousands of localized power outages across portions of Phoenix, Mesa, Tempe and surrounding East Valley communities as strong wind gusts affected equipment.

APS said more than 2,300 customers were affected in Coolidge, and the power company does not expect power to be restored until 10 a.m. Sunday.

In Glendale, several hundred customers were without power, but it is expected to be restored by 8:45 p.m.

SRP said an estimated 352 customers in Phoenix lost power, but it is expected to be restored at 6:29 p.m.

More than 1,000 SRP customers in Tempe lost power, and more than 2,000 SRP customers in Mesa lost power, but power is expected to be restored in both areas within the hour.

The Arizona Department of Transportation reported that heavy rainfall in north Phoenix nearly obscured its camera view.

NWS Phoenix issued a wind advisory for parts of the Valley.

NWS said the threat for showers and storms in the Phoenix Metro ended around 5:30 p.m.
