Fire crews working to rescue 2 hikers with heat exhaustion from Scottsdale trail

Fire crews are working to rescue two hikers suffering from heat exhaustion on the Gateway Loop Trail in Scottsdale, authorities said.

Crews from the Scottsdale and Phoenix fire departments responded to a call at the trail near Thompson Peak Parkway at 11:44 a.m. A man and a woman in their 60s were reported to be suffering from heat exhaustion about two miles from the trailhead.

More than 25 firefighters and other personnel were called to the rescue. Four Scottsdale Fire e-bikes carrying advanced life support equipment were sent up the trail.

Scottsdale Fire said crews are considering multiple rescue plans, including using a utility vehicle. Another option is a big-wheel operation — a stretcher mounted on a single large all-terrain wheel.

The news comes as much of the Valley is under an extreme heat warning that is expected to last through Monday night.

This is an active rescue. No other information was made available.
