SRP bolsters grid with 250-megawatt battery storage system in Mesa

A 250-megawatt battery storage system by the Salt River Project (SRP) and Aypa Power in Mesa started serving customers on Tuesday.
The Pediment Battery Storage System is located in the Elliot Road Technology Corridor, which is near Elliot and Ellsworth roads, and has a capacity to power up to 56,250 homes for four hours.
Pediment goes online as SRP expects to more than double its system capacity over the next decade to meet growing electricity demand driven by rising populations and expanding commercial development. SRP noted that battery storage will play a key role in meeting peak demands and maintaining system reliability.
“The addition of new battery energy storage resources provides SRP with flexibility and capacity that helps us reliably serve our customers,” Bobby Olsen, SRP associate general manager and chief power system executive, said in a news release. “This project is an important addition to SRP’s energy portfolio and supports SRP’s commitment to providing reliable, affordable and sustainable power as the Valley continues to experience record growth.”
Aypa Power acquired the Pediment project from Eolian in 2024 and it is one of two projects it has contracted with SRP.
Both of the projects make up 500-megawatt and 3,000-megawatt-hour of SRP’s system energy storage capacity.
Pediment alone is expected to have more than $16 million in direct economic impact, $14 million of which will be property tax revenue in its first 20 years of operation.

SRP uses a mix of nuclear, hydroelectric, natural gas, coal, battery storage, solar, wind, biomass and geothermal energy to maintain its reliability and affordability.

Just a fake reason “ to power of the homes“: locations hosted for about 20+ data centers with in less then 1mi very-very hungry on gigawatts, generating significant heat waste, IT IS THE concern about what they contribute to already hot conditions for local Arizonians.
So much for the silly criticism that "the sun doesn't shine at night".
