High-tech DroneDogs now providing private security in the Valley

Half security guard—half good boy. You may see robotic guard dogs on patrol around the Valley.

“It’s just a really cool robot on legs,” said Kurt George, vice president of Asylon Robotics, about his company’s “DroneDog” on Arizona’s Morning News on 92.3 FM. “It’s about the size of a dog … four legs, without a head and without a tail, but it definitely has sensors all the way around,” George said.

The high-tech pup, which is powered by Boston Dynamics, comes equipped with a large front camera that can rotate 180 degrees in every direction and can see in the dark. George said the dogs can patrol on scheduled routes or be remotely controlled by Asylon operators from its robotics security operations center if a dog sniffs out anything suspicious.

“We have two-way audio. We can hear everything that’s going on, and then if the dog comes up on someone, they can say either preprogrammed messages, bark, and you can even record the bark from any dog you wish,” George said. And yes, that includes your actual furry friend as well.

George said it costs about $30 an hour to rent the dogs for private security, which he said is comparable to two-legged human security.
