Retired deputy who survived 2013 shooting killed by son in Surprise over weekend

A 37-year-old man fatally shot his retired deputy father inside a Surprise home Saturday before being killed by responding officers, police said.

It happened near Reems and Greenway roads around 6:30 p.m.

Police say a man and his father were involved in an argument, and multiple shots were heard.

Detectives identified the father as 63-year-old Ruben Garcia, a retired Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office deputy who served from September 1984 until his retirement in May 2015. Garcia is believed to have been shot and killed by his son, 37-year-old Brandon Garcia, inside the home.

“When our officers arrived, they made entry, and that is when the officer-involved shooting occurred,” police told ABC15.

Brandon Garcia was reportedly hit by officer gunfire and died at the scene.

The investigation into the officer-involved shooting itself continues.

Ruben Garcia previously survived being shot in the face and torso during a traffic stop involving a domestic violence suspect in Peoria in January 2013.

“The passing of retired Deputy Sheriff Ruben Garcia … is a tragedy that his life ended like this,” said Sheridan in a statement. “Deputy Garcia bravely survived being shot in the line of duty and continued to serve with dedication until his retirement,” Sheridan said.
