Suspect in aggravated assault dead after high-speed chase in West Valley

The suspect in an aggravated assault on Saturday, who led police in a speed chase, died in the hospital Saturday afternoon, authorities said Sunday.

The suspect in an aggravated assault on Saturday, who led police in a high-speed chase, died in the hospital Saturday afternoon, authorities said Sunday.

The Avondale Police Department responded to reports of an aggravated assault near Avondale Boulevard and Van Buren Street at about 12:40 p.m.

A man, identified as 39-year-old Luis Matsumoto, had reportedly shot at another vehicle and fled northbound on Avondale Boulevard at a high speed, police said.

Officers quickly located the suspect’s vehicle, which had struck a passenger vehicle at Thomas Road and Avondale Boulevard before crashing just south of Bermuda Drive.

Police found the Matsumoto in the vehicle and transported him to the hospital in extremely critical condition, where he died at around 1:30 p.m.

The victim struck at Thomas Road sustained minor, non-life-threatening injuries and the original victims of the reported aggravated assault were not harmed, police said.
