Phoenix mountain rescues surge ahead of summer hiking season

The Phoenix Fire Department has responded to 74 mountain rescues so far this year, a more than 50% increase from the same time last year.

From January to June of 2025, the department had responded to 49 rescues. It ended the year with more than 200 rescue operations, most of them during the summer.

During a media event on Thursday at South Mountain Preserve, Capt. Adam Skiver with the Phoenix Fire Department said he is not surprised hikers continue to end up in dangerous situations, despite repeated safety warnings.

“They may have never been out here before. They may be new to the Valley, may be just visiting. It doesn’t look ominous … it doesn’t seem as bad as it is, and then the next thing you know, they get into a bad spot,” Skiver said.

Who accounts for most mountain rescues around metro Phoenix?

The department said out-of-town visitors make up a large share of rescues, but locals account for 60% of the calls.

Skiver said that while Camelback Mountain and Piestewa Peak are notoriously difficult, flatter trails, including those at South Mountain, can be just as dangerous.

South Mountain Preserve spans 16,000 acres and has more than 100 miles of trails, making it the largest municipal park in the country.

“The last rescue I had here, we hiked 4.5 miles in, so it takes a lot of resources, a lot of time and a lot of effort to get to the patients and get them out,” Skiver said.

The department said Phoenix trails have seen a record number of hikers this year, making it especially important for people to bring plenty of water, wear proper footwear and never underestimate the heat or terrain.
