DPS seizes 10 guns, 5,000 rounds of ammunition headed for Mexico during Marana traffic stop

Multiple guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition believed to be headed to Mexico were seized by the Arizona Department of Public Safety during a traffic stop in Marana last week.

Multiple guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition believed to be headed to Mexico were seized by the Arizona Department of Public Safety during a traffic stop in Marana last week.

On May 21, detectives stopped a Hyundai sedan for civil traffic violations just after midnight on eastbound Interstate 10. During the stop, detectives observed multiple firearms cases inside the car but when they asked the driver about weapons they denied having any, according to a DPS news release.

Detectives proceeded to search the car and allegedly found 10 guns, 5,000 rounds of ammunition and miscellaneous gun parts.

DPS said the guns that were found included:

  • A M240 machine gun
  • A M249 machine gun
  • A AK-47
  • A Barrett .50-caliber semi-automatic rifle
  • Six Colt 38 Super semi-automatic handguns

The driver was arrested at the scene after being identified as a prohibited possessor.
