Domestic violence suspect shot by Glendale police arrested after release from hospital

A domestic violence suspect who was shot by police in Glendale was booked into jail Sunday, authorities announced Monday.

Daren Howard had been hospitalized following the May 20 shooting, according to the Glendale Police Department.

Police said Howard was threatening a woman with a knife at a business near 63rd Avenue and Bell Road.

Witnesses told authorities the man entered the business with a woman who was attempting to purchase a firearm. While speaking with the store’s manager, the woman revealed a large cut on her hand and mouthed “Call 911,” officials said.

Howard became upset, prompting the manager to call 911.

When officers arrived, they ordered the couple to separate. Police said Howard instead wrapped his arms around the woman’s neck from behind and pulled out a knife. When one officer’s Taser was ineffective, a second officer shot at Howard.

Howard charges include aggravated assault, disorderly conduct with a weapon, kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment.

The woman was brought to safety and treated for injuries she sustained prior to the shooting.
