Hundreds of flights delayed at Phoenix Sky Harbor due to weather around the country

PHOENIX — Phoenix Sky Harbor saw hundreds of flights delayed and some cancelled due to weather conditions around the country on Monday.

As of around 4:30 p.m., Sky Harbor’s website showed 137 flights delayed and two flights cancelled. One was an American Airlines flight from Denver to Phoenix and the other was a Frontier Airlines flight from Phoenix to Salt Lake City.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Salt Lake City, the area was seeing snow in the mountains, rain in the valley and one neighborhood was even receiving a mix of the two.

However, flight tracking website FlightAware showed a total of 293 delays — 147 of which were out of Sky Harbor while 146 were to Phoenix — and four cancellations. The additional two cancellations were Southwest Airlines flights from Dallas Love Field Airport and San Antonio International Airport to Sky Harbor.

NWS in San Antonio warned of a chance of thunderstorms Monday afternoon, which were expected to continue through Tuesday and Wednesday with the main risks being “large hail, damaging winds, lightning and locally heavy rainfall.”

There was also weather in Chicago causing issues for flights in and out of the city’s two airports, Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Chicago Midway International Airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration had a ground stop at O’Hare due to thunderstorms and listed the average delays as 210 minutes. NWS in Chicago had the storms listed as being strong to severe. It also sent out a wind advisory and high wind warning earlier in the day due to gusts of up to 50 to 60 mph being possible.
