Tempe to open 8 new pickleball courts at Sports Complex

PHOENIX — The city of Tempe will double the number of pickleball courts at Tempe Sports Complex with a grand opening celebration set for April 24.

The expansion brings the facility to 16 courts, up from the eight that opened in 2019 as the first ADA-accessible pickleball courts in Arizona, according to a city news release. A ribbon-cutting ceremony and live demonstrations will be held from 5 to 7 p.m.

All 16 courts are currently closed for construction and resurfacing. After the grand opening, courts will be open daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. for the summer season. Play is free on a first-come, first-served basis outside of scheduled classes.

The project is funded through Tempe’s Parks Capital Improvement Program, which is doling out more than $60 million to city parks over five years.

Officials said the expansion responds to demand identified during the Tempe Parks and Recreation Master Plan update.
