Flagstaff City Council continues meeting through lockdown while police respond to nearby gunfire

PHOENIX — A man was arrested after shots were fired near Flagstaff City Hall on Tuesday evening while the city council was in session, authorities said.

Officers responded to a report of gunfire at about 7:25 p.m. at the downtown library, according to the Flagstaff Police Department. City Hall was placed on lockdown for about 30 minutes, though the council meeting continued.

Lymann Yazzie, 28, of Cameron, was detained without incident.

Officers recovered a firearm nearby and obtained video evidence, police said.

The Flagstaff City Council livestream captured the moment when an unidentified voice tells the councilmembers and audience to stay in the chambers.

“Mayor, council, we are currently on lockdown in the facility,” announced the speaker. “If you could stay in the building, we’ve had an incident across the street in the park and PD is currently investigating it.”

“You guys enjoy your slumber party there,” said council member Austin Aslan, who joined the meeting by phone. “Nothing more for me.”

“I do have some food in my cooler if anyone’s super hungry,” offered a speaker from the dais.

No injuries were reported.

The shooting investigation is ongoing

Yazzie may also be connected to a separate firearms incident earlier Tuesday evening near Thorpe Park, according to Flagstaff Police.

He was booked into the Coconino County jail on charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, disorderly conduct with a weapon and discharging a weapon within city limits.
