Harkins Theatres to bring Arizona’s first 4D moviegoing experience to north Phoenix

PHOENIX — Harkins Theatres plans to open Arizona’s first 4D immersive movie theatre this August in north Phoenix, the company announced Monday.

The 4D auditorium will be opening at Harkins Theatres Norterra, which is located near Happy Valley Road and 19th Avenue.

Under a six-location agreement with Lumma 4D E-Motion, Harkins will install the 4D format in three Arizona theaters as well as three additional locations that have not been announced.

What happens in a 4D auditorium?

Harkins’ 4D auditoriums feature motion seating that coordinate with scents, air, water and other environmental effects timed to the on-screen action.

“This new movie experience is fully immersive and fun while staying true to our standards for comfort, quality presentation and storytelling,” Harkins CEO and President Mike Bowers said in a press release.

The 4D format is still a relatively small slice of U.S. movie theatres. Regal operates roughly 52 4DX auditoriums across the United States. AMC opened its first two 4DX locations on March 19 in Houston and Kansas City as part of a 40-auditorium rollout.
