Suspect arrested in fatal Mill Avenue shooting in downtown Tempe

PHOENIX – Tempe police have arrested a suspect in connection with a deadly shooting on Mill Avenue in downtown Tempe over the weekend, authorities announced Wednesday.

Aidan Zepeda, 23, was booked into jail on counts of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, unlawful discharge of firearms and endangerment, according to the Tempe Police Department.

Officers responded to the crime scene at 401 S. Mill Ave., near the Tempe Mission Palms Hotel, around 2:20 a.m. Saturday, according to authorities.

They found a man suffering from a gunshot wound and initiated life-saving aid. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, 22-year-old Jacob Jaime died after being taken to a hospital.

Another man was hurt during the Mill Avenue shooting incident, but he did not require hospitalization, police said.

Bars and businesses in the downtown area, which is regularly patrolled by the Tempe Police Bike Squad, were closed at the time of the deadly incident. Police said officers arrived at the shooting scene within 20 seconds.

The investigation remains active, but police said there is no current threat to the community.

He’s being held on $2 million bond.
